Start of the November of Science: LIAG participating as a partner

From 5 to 23 November 2025, Hannover’s universities, research institutions and education organisations invite the public to experiments, talks, discussions and exhibitions under the motto #knowember. More than 100 events can be found online at www.hannover.de/knowember. LIAG is a partner of Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover: at the public opening event on 5 November, researchers will be interviewed at Herrenhausen Palace in Hannover about their stay in Antarctica. On 7 and 13 November 2025, LIAG researchers will take visitors on a research expedition to Antarctica and to the Kalahari.

[Translate to Englisch:] Let's GeO im November der Wissenschaft

Around 60 institutions are taking part in the Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover’s high-attendance format. For several events—especially those aimed at school pupils and teachers—registration is required due to limited places. In the “Let’s GeO” event format, LIAG researchers will take you along on their expeditions around the world. At the Leibnizhaus in Hannover, they will show what everyday research looks like under extreme conditions in Antarctica and in the Kalahari, and why it is valuable to get to the bottom of groundwater systems and climate and landscape change—including for our region of Lower Saxony: www.liag-institut.de/lets-geo

Opening event
“Fit for the future – research from Hannover for a healthy life” is the theme of the #knowember opening event on 5 November at the Schloss Herrenhausen Conference Centre. Topics include the use of artificial intelligence and robotics in medicine, the development of new drugs and implants, and the question of whether music keeps you young. Researcher Dr Arne Ulfers will also be interviewed on stage about how to stay mentally and physically healthy on research expeditions, even in extreme and remote places such as Antarctica.

In 2025, universities and research institutions will once again host the “Open Days” (13/11; 15/11; 19/11; 22/11) and “The Night of Knowledge” (8/11). There will also be numerous offerings for children, young people and families. Almost all events are free of charge. Hannover will get creative and politically historical in the “Astronomy & Quantum Physics” theme area. The Albert Einstein Institute will commemorate the world’s first detection of gravitational waves ten years ago in Hannover and will initiate visitors into the secrets of the universe. One hundred years after the formulation of quantum mechanics, in the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025, the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence’s exhibition “Why is spacetime curved?” will bring art and science together in a performative way (15–16/11). Science journalist Dr Astrid Viciano will also reveal in a reading (10/11) how nuclear physicists, including in France, helped prevent the Nazis’ atomic bomb and the personal risks they took. Many encounters will be possible in #knowember 2025: at events on Antarctica, researchers look forward to engaging with the public. Enercity will present how Hannover aims to become the world’s first major city to be supplied with climate-neutral heat via a novel, closed deep-geothermal system that works independently of underground hot-water reservoirs (19/11).

Hannover Zoo invites young and old to join in research at the weekends. The Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony will address violence in schools, partnerships and against fire service personnel. Prospective university students and current students will receive information from the Studentenwerk and the Federal Employment Agency on student finance and job opportunities. And international students in Hannover will share their experiences of studying and starting their careers in Germany (12/11).

The November of Science is a project of Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover, in which—alongside the state capital—Hannover’s universities, the Fraunhofer ITEM, the LIAG Institute for Applied Geophysics, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Studentenwerk Hannover and hannoverimpuls GmbH are involved. The format has been held every two years since 2008 and was postponed by one year in 2020 due to the pandemic. November of Science 2025 is funded by VGH Versicherungen.
