In the DFG project, ARENICOLA, we are developing a new method to fingerprint sand grains in order to determine their mineralogy and crystal defect inventory. We measure the cold light emitted by minerals under radioactive irradiation (radioluminescence) and analyse the gained multispectral images using machine learning methods. If successful, this project will provide a new tool for geophysical parameterisation. This talk will present first results and provide insights into the technical challenges.
