Bundling research on georeservoirs as energy sources and energy storage facilities

The supply and storage of energy are key elements in the development, design and organisation of economies worldwide. Currently, fossil fuels from permeable, porous rock formations and reservoirs (oil, natural gas, coal) still provide the largest share of energy, and variable energy demand is buffered by means such as pumped storage plants. A key advantage of fossil energy sources and geothermal energy is their base load capacity. The increasing production of renewable energy from solar and wind energy requires large-scale storage systems to meet demand due to its variable availability in terms of time and location. Georeservoirs, i.e. geological, porous and permeable rock formations, are ideal for this purpose. Energy, for example in the form of excess heat, hydrogen and natural gas, can be temporarily stored in these reservoirs and extracted again when needed. Over the past decades, LIAG has gained an international reputation in the exploration and characterisation of geothermal reservoirs. The technical and scientific approaches and methods can be directly applied to the topic of ‘georeservoirs’. In addition, suitable georeservoirs are widespread in the North German Basin and thus in Lower Saxony due to the geological conditions, and a research network specialising in this field has been established.
